While the clan MacNeil of Barra is centered in Barra in the Outer Hebrides, there is a branch of the clan in Argyll that some historians have speculated was more senior in line, or possibly even unrelated. However, according to Scots law, the current chief of Clan Macneil is the chief of all MacNeil

Donald MacNeil of Crerar, a descendant of Torquil MacNeil of Taynish, was the founder of the MacNeil of Colonsay clan. He exchanged the lands of Crerar with the Duke of Argyll for Colonsay and Oronsay in the 18th century. The 6th MacNeil, sold Colonsay to his brother, Duncan, in 1846. Duncan MacNeil, who was Lord Justice General, was created Lord Colonsay in 1867 and had a distinguished career.
